If you are in danger of losing your home and want to learn about stopping foreclosure, the first people you should call are those who work in your lender's loss mitigation department. These are employees who are on the front lines of helping people stay in their homes with a loan modification. If they don't want to or can't help you, then try loan modification companies who might be able to work something out with your lender. Preferably, the loan modification companies have a lawyer who participates actively in each modification, and is not there just as a symbol.
There have been warnings about some loan modification companies who take fees and the loan modifications fail. Before you sign up with loan modification companies, make sure they are bona fide companies and not loosely managed groups who really can't help you much. You have a lot at stake if you have to use loan modification companies, so make sure the one you are going to work with can deliver what they promise. It helps to get references or check with the Better Business Bureau in your area.
